Climate Change

Arable farming and the changing climate: what will it mean, what can I do?    (329kb)
(Publication summarising the papers from the HGCA R&D Conference 2008)

HGCA is working with Farming Futures on a project looking at farming and climate change.

Farming Futures fact sheets

FFSS10 Focus on arable crops    (925kb)
This looks at key concerns, opportunities and challenges of climate change for arable farmers.

FFSS18 Focus on water management    (710kb)
This looks at actions to help reduce the costs and risks of climate change

FFSS20 Focus on soil management    (517kb)
This looks at ways to adapt soil management decisions to the impacts of climate change.

FFSS21 Focus on nutrient management    (635kb)
Good nutrient management planning can minimise emissions of greenhouse gases from nitrogen (N) inputs, reduce the incidence of diffuse water pollution, and help farmers save money through optimising productivity.

Farming Futures case studies
These case studies illustrate how UK arable growers have taken opportunities to adapt to or mitigate climate change on their farm.

1. Focus on soil management    (1369kb), Jim Bullock, Worcestershire

4. Focus on energy crops    (1064kb), Robert Wiseman, Essex

5. Focus on cover crops to reduce nitrogen fertiliser    (1051kb), David Jones, Oxfordshire

7. Focus on water conservation    (450kb), Julian Hasler, Gloucestershire

13. Focus on changing crops    (134kb), Dan Squier, Essex

21 Focus on differential thermostats in grain stores    (421kb) , Stewart Vernon, County Durham
