Grain for milling

These ongoing projects relate to the work that HGCA has commissioned in relation to grain for milling.

Click on the titles for an upshot of the problem to be addressed, the aims, the approach and the benefits to the industry. Also will be attached the latest information in the form of Annual Project Reports (APRs) or Interim Reports.

RD-2004-2492 Investigating wheat functionality through breeding and end use (FQS23). By increasing the amount of high quality wheat grown in the UK, import cost could be significantly reduced.

RD-2004-3022 Better Organic Bread Integrating Raw Material and Process Requirements for Organic Bread Production (LK 0960)
The aim of the project is to assist the UK food industry to produce organic bread of good quality using sustainably produced domestically grown organic wheat.

RD-2004-3100 Food safety review of UK cereal grain for use in malting, milling and animal feed
To support and maintain the wholesomeness and acceptability in domestic and export markets of UK-grown cereal grain for use in the malting, milling and animal feed industries.

RD-2004-3134 Monitoring risks of mycotoxin contamination caused by Fusarium head blight pathogens in winter wheat
To monitor and investigate fusarium disease and mycotoxin contamination in winter wheat and to advise industry of seasonal and regional risks.

RD-2005-3196 An integrated approach to stabilising Hagberg falling number in wheat: screens, genes and understanding (SA 326)
The aim of this programme is the delivery of screening systems and molecular markers that will lead to the development of new varieties of bread wheat with stable HFN and bread-making quality under variable weather conditions.

RD-2006-3288 Improving risk assessment to minimise fusarium mycotoxins in harvested wheat grain
Monitoring the fusarium mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEAR) at harvest in UK wheat.

RD-2006-3333 Evaluation of Rapid Test Kits as Potential Screening Tools for Ochratoxin A (OTA) Determination in Wheat
To identify potential commercially available methods/technologies for the quantitative assessment of OTA in cereals.

RD-2004-2957 The incorporation of important traits underlying sustainable development of the oat crop through combining 'conventional' phenotypic selection with molecular marker technologies (OATLINK).
The incorporation of important traits underlying sustainable development of the oat crop through combining conventiona phenotypic selection with molecular marker technologies.

RD-2003-2975 Dietary Antioxidants in cereal-oil crops - PhD
This is a PhD studentship investigating the nature of these potential antioxidants in untreated cereals and oils and the effect of processing on their potential bioavailability.
