Soissons

Variety notes - Winter wheat
« Back
  • Soissons is a very early maturing nabim Group 2 variety recommended for the dry (East) and wet (West) Regions.

  • Yields are substantially below other recommended varieties and a premium payment would be required to make it economic.

  • nabim reports that it is an early maturing variety liked by millers and used in specialised bread grists. It can, on occasion, command a price equivalent to Group 1 varieties.

  •  Classified as ukp bread wheat. Meets the specifications of the export brand and has support from end-users.

  • Takes a relatively small but consistent area of the national crop reflecting the market requirements for its type of flour.

  • Good protein content and specific weight.

  • Good resistance to yellow rust but susceptible to brown rust and very susceptible to eyespot. Above average resistance to mildew and good resistance to Fusarium ear blight.

  • A very fast developing variety so not suited to early sowing and gives a relatively better yield when sown after the beginning of November.

  • No longer in trials.

  • Breeder: Maison Florimond Desprez, France.

  • UK Agent: Elsoms Seeds Ltd (www.elsoms.com ).
