Cereal disease control in the UK is based on growing varieties with genetic disease resistance combined with cultural methods and appropriate inputs of fungicides.
Resistance is often short-lived as pathogens adapt to new resistance genes and gene combinations in commercial varieties.
The UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey (UKCPVS) monitors changes in pathogen virulence.

supports plant breeding for improved and more durable resistance

underpins cultivar evaluation and recommendation schemes

Disease samples are collected annually throughout the UK from crops and trials' plots

Pathogen isolates are tested for virulence

New pathotypes are detected and their potential impact assessed

The increase and spread of new pathotypes is tracked

Results are disseminated widely in plant breeding and farming circles

Collections of critical pathogen isolates are maintained for further research and screening
