What the UKCPVS does:

Cereal disease control in the UK is based on growing varieties with genetic disease resistance combined with cultural methods and appropriate inputs of fungicides.

Resistance is often short-lived as pathogens adapt to new resistance genes and gene combinations in commercial varieties.

The UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey (UKCPVS) monitors changes in pathogen virulence.

The UKCPVS:

  • protects cereal growers from unexpected epidemics
  • supports plant breeding for improved and more durable resistance
  • underpins cultivar evaluation and recommendation schemes

Methods

  • Disease samples are collected annually throughout the UK from crops and trials' plots
  • Pathogen isolates are tested for virulence
  • New pathotypes are detected and their potential impact assessed
  • The increase and spread of new pathotypes is tracked
  • Results are disseminated widely in plant breeding and farming circles
  • Collections of critical pathogen isolates are maintained for further research and screening
