Crop Evaluation Ltd is a separate company wholly owned by HGCA. Its mission is to identify and recommend the appropriate cereal and oilseed-rape varieties for the different market sectors of the industry in a timely and cost–effective manner, and to ensure that these recommendations are publicised. It seeks the involvement of all significant sectors of the industry in achieving this mission but will make its recommendations in the interests of the industry as a whole.
Implicit in this are two sub-objectives:
-
To provide information on the strengths and weaknesses of recommended varieties (particularly in relation to their suitability for different markets, for sustainable cropping systems and for meeting the needs of the end consumers) based on trials conducted in broad agronomic settings. This data will be widely disseminated to aid farmers and their advisors to develop the best agronomy packages for profitable crop production. It is not the intent of Crop Evaluation to determine the detailed agronomic performance of varieties for local circumstances.
-
To ensure that breeders – who are the source of genetic innovation – are stimulated to develop suitable varieties for all UK industry in a timely manner.
-
Design and contract trials of the performance of candidate and existing recommended or listed varieties.
-
Select candidate varieties for trialling.
-
Acquire other data on the performance of potential candidate and existing recommended or listed varieties.
-
Compile and analyse all relevant data of sufficient quality on the performance of potential or listed candidate and existing recommended varieties.
-
On the basis of the analysis, publish an annual list of recommended varieties.
-
Make appropriate data available.
-
Ensure sufficient and timely publicity for the RL and compiled data so that maximum use of the information is made for the benefit of UK industry.
-
Stimulate research, alone or with others, necessary to enhance the performance of its activities.
-
Raise funds to cover its operations and assess the value added to the industry by the use of those funds.
