Grain drying and storage - the challenge for the 2008 crop :

With the late and very wet harvest conditions this year, the challenge is to dry grain rapidly so that it can be stored safely without the risk of the development of Ochratoxin A, a mycotoxin produced by the fungus Penicillium verrucosum.

The weather conditions in 2008 have been favourable to fungal infection and hence fusarium mycotoxin development. Early season testing by nabim, AIC and ACFM members has shown that overall levels are broadly similar to 2007 but that a number of geographic areas appear to have levels of DON that are higher than indicated by a risk assessment.

Results from HGCA-funded research have shown that dormancy in black-grass seed samples this autumn is very high. Seeds for the project were collected by farmers, ADAS, AIC members, AICC and Rothamsted Research.
